Maldon could become home to a leading apprenticeship scheme to get people involved in boatbuilding if a £3m funding bid is accepted.

Under the plans a dozen people would be trained each year in boatbuilding and the conservation of historic vessels.

A bid for funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund has been submitted alongside a support letter from Maldon District Council.

The council’s economic development team are helping prepare an expression of interest application for the Coastal Communities Fund.

The fund aims to create sustainable economic growth and jobs in coastal areas.

Information on plans for the apprenticeship scheme were unveiled to councillors at a meeting of the planning and licensing committee last week.

A spokesman said: “The council is supportive of a Heritage Lottery Fund application from the Heritage Marine Foundation of approximately £3m to set up a national apprenticeship scheme in Maldon that would train 12 apprentices per year rising to 24 per year in all aspects of maintenance but also in environmental issues and how to look after the waters of our coastline.

“The apprentices would work on a reclaimed 1920s trawler which, once completed, will be used an educational tool touring the British coast attending various sailing events promoting the scheme and highlighting the damage that pollution does to our seas.”
