A popular pub near the centre of Halstead will be closed until further notice after the tenants chose to leave the premises after struggling to make a success of it.

The Bird in Hand pub, Chapel Hill, Halstead, announced on its Facebook page it would be closing for the foreseeable future on Tuesday.

The property is already being re-marketed to prospective tenants, however in the interim period the facility will be shut to customers.

A statement from the landlords said: “Sad to say that we are saying goodbye to Halstead. We just couldn’t make it work the way we hoped.

“Plus the neighbours’ complaints about the noise and music have not helped our situation.

“So another pub is closing for the foreseeable future until someone else can be found to try and make this work.

“We have met some lovely people on our journey here and hopefully we can stay in touch, but for now it is goodbye to Halstead.”

Since the closure was announced, residents have taken to Facebook to express their disappointment.

The Gazette contacted the current tenants, who took over the pub in the autumn, for more of an explanation about the problems but they declined to comment.

Situated in a residential area of Halstead, the Bird in Hand is a grade-II listed building which can seat about 50 covers in its restaurant.

Accommodation in the form of two-bedrooms, lounge, kitchen and dining room, is available above the pub, according to the marketing details.

A car park at the rear of the business has space for 20 cars.

The property is owned by Enterprise Inns, a company which manages hundreds of pubs across the country.

A spokesperson for Enterprise Inns, said: “We can confirm that The Bird in Hand, Halstead is currently closed.

"We are currently looking for a new publican to take on the site, if anyone is interested in this exciting opportunity, or want further information, please call our recruitment hotline on 03333 200036.”

Last week The Gazette reported The Royal Oak, in High Street, Halstead, was up for sale for £375,000.
