Plans to employ two special constables to patrol the streets of Halstead have been put on hold.

The town council is asking for clarification on the definition of the role, which will see two members of the public act as constables for at least 16 hours a week.

Town mayor Shirley Diver said: “We didn’t have enough information about how it worked so we have asked for clarification.

“We need to know whether they will be for town or if they will be needed in other areas like Hedingham, Gosfield or Braintree.”

Special constables have the power to make arrests and are given training by Essex Police.

The role is voluntary but expenses of up to £1,000 can be claimed for travel.

Mrs Diver admits she has concerns about the concept and feels it could leave many residents feeling aggrieved.

She added: “Personally, I’m not a fan of the idea.

“Everyone pays their rates so its not fair to ask them to pay double when they are already paying for police to watch over the town.”
