A FREE event giving advice and support to elderly residents of the district is taking place in Halstead.

The Livewell Keep Safe Day has been organised by Braintree Council and will offer crime prevention advice from organisations like Essex Police and Essex County Fire and Rescue Service.

Agencies including Crimestoppers, Action for Family carers, Age UK and Citizens Advice will also run presentation throughout the day.

Wendy Schmitt, councillor responsible for Environment and Place, said: "The safety of our older residents is very important to us which is why we are hosting this event where support, advice and services could be accessed all in one place.

“I am pleased that we are able to offer an opportunity to access information which helps protect older people against crime and accidents inside and outside of the home.”

Groups will also be on hand to answer questions and provide information on health and wellbeing services.

Guests will be treated to a tea dance demonstrations and can join seated exercise classes run by Greenfields Community Housing.

Peter Tattersley, councillor responsible for health and communities, said: "We are thrilled to be able to run this event for the third year running for our residents who may not be able to reach all of the services that are available to them.

“Aside from providing valuable information, it will give older Halstead residents a great opportunity to meet people, make friends and enjoy some gentle exercise and companionship.”

The Keep Safe Day takes place at Queens Hall, in Chipping Hill, Halstead, between 10am and 2.30pm on Thursday, March 8.
