Extra patrols of special constables could be seen on the streets of Halstead if the town council agrees to pay for them.
Halstead Town Council is considering paying the costs and expenses for two volunteers. Special Constables have full police powers.
Essex Police would help to train the constables who would then be allocated a base in the town where they can keep any equipment and uniform.
The part time volunteer constables would fulfil the duty on a voluntary basis, however expenses such as travelling would be reimbursed. Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner Roger Hirst promised double the number of Special Constables to 700 when elected.
A council report due to be presented to the meeting stated: “Facing growing pressure from residents on the lack of a police presence in Halstead, the council has been exploring the possibility of taking on a number of special constables.”
