FARMERS across the Braintree district are being targeted by thieves, it is claimed.

Adam Scott, Essex representative for the National Farmers’ Union, claims farmers in Halstead and Braintree are regularly victims of rural crime.

Former farm manager Mr Scott, who lives in Earls Colne, raised concerns about farmers’ constant need to barricade their land and has revealed the extent of the problem in rural parts of Essex.

He said: “I’d say in the Braintree district there has been four or five farmers who have suffered from crime in the last month.

“Sadly if farmers don’t lock up at night and barricade equipment in you can bet it won’t be there in the morning.

“It is unacceptable that people are having to barricade themselves in and turn their businesses into fortresses.”

Essex Police will be rolling out their rural crime strategy on Thursday, November 16 at Stow Maries Aerodrome near Purleigh.

The scheme will see extra patrols in rural spots and a new five man team established to work on issues such as unauthorised traveller camps, hare coursing and flytipping.

Though Mr Scott believes police are key he also suggested the community needed to help.

He added: “Obviously police have got a role with crime prevention and spreading preventative measures.

“Farmers have a role to play by putting up the correct fencing, having gateways locked off and even by having cameras installed.

“The wider community as a whole can also help just by reporting crimes or suspicious activity in order to help police with their investigations.”
