A GROUP of inspiring women met for afternoon tea and to celebrate life.

Every year the breast care unit at Essex County Hospital hosts a breast cancer survivors’ tea party at the Town Hall in Colchester.

All the guests have won their battle with cancer and to celebrate survivorship they meet for a catch up and some entertainment.

This year, the 16th time the event has been held, they were treated to a Columbian Salsa dancing taster session, as well as a spread of cakes and sandwiches.

Each woman received a pink and silver breast cancer awareness ribbon. The silver has been added to represent survivorship.

Amanda Richer, who was diagnosed in 2015, said the tea parties build friendships and help the women understand they are not alone.

She said: “I just felt numb, there’s no words to describe it and you can’t get your head around it. It can happen to anyone, I just had to stay positive as it’s the only hope. You have got to find that inner strength.

“It comes with long-term side effects but I’m here to tell the tale.”

Other guests included breast surgeon Rosamond Jacklin and Alisha Potter who sits on the Relay for Life fundraising committee, who both gave compelling speeches about beating cancer.

Other members of staff from the breast care unit were also present to show their support.
