DOZENS of green-fingered residents had a chance to pick up some tips during an ask the experts event.

The Four Colnes Horticultural Society invited its membership, allotment associations and the general public to the free event at Earls Colne Village Hall on Saturday.

Five experts from the Royal Horticultural Society's fruit, vegetable and herb committee attended and answered questions from the 35 people in the audience.

Topics of discussion included varieties of rhubarb, growing plums and runner beans.

A spokesman for The Four Colnes Horticultural Society said: "The audience of 35 gardeners certainly left knowing more about their crops and the potential problems and remedies.

"The panel also highlighted the RHS Award of Garden Merit scheme which is aimed at helping gardeners to identify varieties of plants that are proven to be particularly reliable."

Preparations are now entering top gear for the return of the group's popular Four Colnes Show later this month.

The show takes place on Saturday, August 12, at Earls Colne recreation ground from 1pm.

Residents can demonstrate their growing skills as well as other elements like a dog show and classic cars to view.
