A RESIDENT says pedestrians are being left in danger due to a set of under pavement electricity works taking place on both sides of the pathway at the same time.

UK Power Networks is currently conducting work to repair a set of underground cables in Ravens Avenue, Halstead.

The underground cables were damaged last week leading to the emergency repairs.

Pedestrian walkways have been installed on one side of the road but resident Wayne Sheppard is concerned about walkers’s safety, saying some drivers regularly flout the speed limit by up to 20 miles an hour.

Mr Sheppard said: “One of the holes is right by my driveway and getting on and off the driveway is an issue.

“We have two cars and at the moment we can only have one on the driveway.

“But I am not worried about myself, it is pedestrians I am worried about.

“We have had a number of times when people speed down here at 40 or 50 miles an hour.

“I don’t think it has been very well thought out by the planners.”

British Gas were previously conducting work on Ravens Avenue and UK Power Networks work began just after the company left.

Mr Sheppard said: “It feels like we have not had a proper footpath since the beginning of June - then just as it was fixed it is dug up again.

“It has been noticed that the telephone and broadband lines have been unsheathed and the coloured wires have been exposed leading to worries of further disruption.

Mr Sheppard said he had reported the potential issue to Open Reach.

A generator is believed to be operating from the Factory Lane West area to maintain power for residents whilst the cables are repaired.

Residents in the vicinity have been complaining about the disruption from the noise of the generator.

A UK Power Networks spokesman said: “Work started last Wednesday and is due to be finished by Friday.

“Safety is top priority for us so we have installed a safe pedestrian route which meets the required standard, and would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

Roadworks are also being conducted at the roundabout where Ravens Avenue’s meets Parsonage Street where a traffic light system is in place.
