AN award-winning food store is being forced to close due to changes in the market.

The Food Company, in Marks Tey, first opened in 2000 during a time when foodies were worried about the disappearance of independent butchers, fishmongers and bakers from high streets.

They wanted to create a food lovers’ heaven under one roof, and after 17 years the store is now one of the best known one-stop shops for fresh produce.

Bosses were sad to announce they will be closing the store next month.

A message to customers said: “It is with much sadness and regret that The Food Company has decided to call time on the premium food and gifts store, and restaurant in Marks Tey.

“After nearly 17 years of trading, the business will be closing its doors at the end of trading on Friday, July 14.

“We would like to thank everyone who has shopped and dined at The Food Company over the years, your loyal support has been very much appreciated.

“Sadly, the food retail market has changed significantly over the past two decades and the business can no longer compete with the challenges posed by other retailers in the area.

“A closing down sale has started, please do come in and bid us farewell, we’ve made some great memories and some very good friends and are very sad to be closing.”

Customers were shocked and sad to hear the news, saying on the shop’s Facebook page the knowledge and professionalism of staff could not be matched.

In addition to the butchery, fishmonger, greengrocery, chefs counter, delicatessen, chocolate, wine, and pantry departments, the store has a range of luxury home wares.

Staff are proud winners of the Essex Life Fine Food and Drink award for Retailer of the Year 2011 and also The Great Taste Shop of the Year 2013, both of which are recognition for all the hard work the team put in.

Colchester councillor Will Quince visited the store on its 15th birthday.

We contacted the Food Company for a response but did not receive one yesterday.
