NEW lanes of traffic have been opened on a busy Colchester road.

Essex Highways engineers have been working on widening Colne Bank Avenue since July last year.

But now the last of the works have been completed and the road opened to traffic.

There are now two lanes going both east and west.

The work, which had been delayed a number of times, is part of a £50 million investment in a bid to cut congestion in Colchester.

Plans are also in place to widen Cowdray Avenue and Westway while highways bosses also hope to have a left turn slip road in place from all roads leading to Colne Bank roundabout.

Each of those developments will be funded by developer contributions.

Kevin Bentley, deputy leader for Essex County Council, said: “This is just one of a number of schemes which make up our £50 million investment in Colchester’s road, cycle and bus infrastructure.

“Colchester is not only Britain’s oldest recorded town, it is also currently one of its fastest growing.

“We have a responsibility to keep our road and transport network moving to help support this growth, not just now, but for years to come.

“I am delighted to be able to put any rumours of an August opening to bed as we look to help ease congestion for residents and businesses using this vital link road for Colchester and the surrounding area.

“I would like to extend our thanks to local residents for their patience during the works, which should bring much-needed benefits for both Colchester residents and local businesses.”
