A CARE home resident has celebrated her 105th birthday surrounded by friends and family.

Alice Munton marked the milestone at The Oaks Care Home, in Lexden.

Mrs Munton, who was born and grew up in Chigwell, marked the occasion in the home's family room, which was decorated with balloons and banners.

Well wishers were also treated to cakes, drinks, music and other snacks.

Mrs Munton's son, Chris, said: "I don’t think it’s fully sunk in. It was just fantastic.

"Mum was a farmer’s daughter, growing up on the farm in Chigwell.

"Until her mid-50s she was still there using the 14lb sledgehammer and chisel to break up trees to use on the farm.

"She was still riding her bike well into her sixties as well, which just goes to show what an active life and plenty of exercise does for you - even if wielding a sledgehammer is a bit unconventional."

The care home is run by New Century Care.

Mrs Munton turned 105 on May 24.
