A MECHANIC is raising funds to support the family of his friend with cancer.

Simon Edney, from Halstead, is helping to organise a fundraiser for his friend of 20 years, Steve Rook.

Mr Rook, 43, from Sudbury, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in January last year.

Mr Edney, of Colne Road, who is the same age as his friend, said: "Steve is an old friend from years ago, we used to hang about with him in Sudbury.

"He is a really nice, down to earth, genuine guy and they are a humble family.

"We wanted to raise the money for him and his wife Philippa as he can't work.

"Steve found out the cancer had spread to other places and we wanted to raise awareness."

He is starting another round of chemotherapy soon which could slow the growth.

A fundraising day is being organised next month.

Mr Edney said: "I was devastated when I found out, Steve is the same age as me.

"He has come to terms with it, and I think he's doing well."

His friends Lisa Jane Clare, Joanne Cleverley and Laura Hawkins are running the event on Saturday, May 13.

It will be from 2pm at the Stevenson Centre in Great Cornard, Sudbury.

There will be a car show, a number of games and stalls, and refreshments.
