OUTRAGED residents claim “enough is enough” after another site was put forward for hundreds of houses in Halstead.

Gladman Developments has opened a public consultation to build 230 homes on fields off Sudbury Road, plus open space and recreational facilities.

Construction is underway on 103 homes on Colchester Road, while work on 292 homes off Oak Road is set to begin this spring.

The latter development was also secured by Gladman, a developer accused of targeting land where councils have not completed their Local Plans.

With the vast number of houses being built in the market town, residents have been left to question the sustainability of the developments.

Martin Walker, of neighbouring Churchill Avenue, said: “Look at how many houses are going to be built in Halstead already.

“We have a shortage of primary school places, Ramsey Academy is full to the brim, and that is before we mention the doctor’s surgery.

“The current issues are plain to see, and this will only amplify those issues.

“Sustainability is the most important thing here, and there is virtually nothing sustainable about this.

“Two hundred homes will most likely bring 400 or more cars. The High Street is gridlocked every single afternoon, we cannot cope.”

Paul Moss, 70, has lived in the town all his life, and bought his home on Tylneys Road ten years ago because of its picturesque location.

He said: “We are not surprised, because we have seen them preparing the site.

“They have been out with JCBs on the land, after Christmas there was a bloke in the fields at 4.30am and he told us he was testing sound levels for a housing development.

So there is no shock, but we are not happy.

“We paid for the location when we brought this house, for the views and the lovely walks, but that location and the views will be ruined now.

“I don’t know where they are planning access to these homes, because it can’t come from here. Two hundred and thirty homes is likely to be 500 cars if not more, this area can’t take the added pressures.”

Henk Kuhlman, also of Tylneys Road, claimed the plans would be hell for him, but admitted this was not the first time the site has been put forward.

He said: “This has been put on the table time and time again. Every time the site is put forward, it is rejected, just look at the last draft Local Plan.

“All we can do is hope Braintree Council stick to their guns and reject it again.

“But they are far from trustworthy so we will see.

“It would cause a lot of problems for the people living here. I can’t get past the amount of homes already being built, is that not enough?”

Gladman is proposing to build 66 affordable homes and provide cash to expand primary education.

The consultation says a primary school could close in the town if more homes are not built.
