COUNCILLORS have given the red light to requests for traffic calming measures in a road in Halstead.

Residents at the Courtauld Homes of Rest in Hedingham Road wanted a zebra crossing back in 2012.

Since then councillors and residents have been asking for traffic calming measures, but surveys show the traffic is not fast enough to justify one.

A Local Highways Panel report for Braintree Council shows the scheme is against Essex County Council criteria.

Residents thought cars were travelling too fast around the bend and found it very unsafe for pedestrians.

However the report said: "The location in question has a 30mph speed limit.

"The seven day average was 27.2mph south bound and 28.5mph north bound.

"These mean average speeds would be deemed as good compliance."

Dave Gronland, who represents Halstead Town Council on the panel, said he sympathised with residents but felt there was nothing more that could be done.

He said: "We won't be able to get traffic calming measures like speed bumps but perhaps something like a flashing speed sign.

"It's just how it is, I really do sympathise with residents as I know what the road is like."
