UP to £25,000 could be spent on improving the visibility of a zebra crossing.

Sible Hedingham Parish Council had concerns about the current crossing outside the Post Office in Swan Street.

Councillors had said there had been near misses due to the poor visibility of the crossing, and because of speeding cars.

Swan Street is known as an accident blackspot, and the issue of the crossing is being raised at a Local Highways Panel Meeting at Braintree Council on Thursday, January 19.

A scheme to change the crossing to a signalised one has been seen as feasible and is available for consideration by Essex Highways.

Braintree Council reviewed the scheme's potential as a budget of £25,000 has been set aside.

Ron Volkwyn, chairman of the parish council, said: "The idea was to change to it a pelican crossing with lights, but we can't get a date of when it will happen.

"We are pushing to get it done as soon as possible but it's out of our control.

"It's something we want sooner rather than later but it's totally out of our hands.

"I wish I could wave a magic wand and make it happen."
