A TORY councillor has resigned after 24 years of serving the community.

Robert Bolton, who represented Bumpstead ward on Braintree Council has announced his resignation.

He has been in the role since May 1991 and he describes his time as a councillor as a “privilege and an honour”.

Graham Butland, Leader of Braintree Council, said: "I am sorry to lose Robert from the council because he is a diligent and popular member and we all wish him all the best for his future plans as he moves from the district.”

He also sat as chairman of Halstead's area committee.

Witham councillor Chris Bailey, who represented Witham North ward on both Braintree Council and Witham Town Council, has also announced his resignation from both councils.

He said: "I am very sad to be standing down- with my wife we are launching a new business.

"It will be an exciting time with increasing work pressures involving travel to many parts of the country.

"I will not be unable to devote the amount of time that is necessary to properly represent my constituents.”

Mr Butland said he was "conscientious" and "committed".

The Returning Officer has announced that both District Council by- elections will be held on October 20.
