A LITTLE Yeldham teenager is set to walk the length of the Great Wall of China and further next month in the name of charity.

Jess Day, 19, and lifelong friend Alex Unsworth, 21, will be taking on the challenge to raise money for St Nicholas Hospice, raising nearly £6,000 at this stage.

Last August, Alex’s nan Mary Vogeler died aged 81 in St Nicholas Hospice, Bury St Edmunds.

She had been a loyal supporter of the hospice and other cancer charities for a number of years, donating money regularly.

Inspired by the care Mary received whilst in the hospice and determined to make sure that other people were able to benefit it, the duo decided to embark on an adventure across the Great Wall of China, organised by Action Challenge.

Jess, who previously studied at Colchester Institute, and Alex, of Thetford, in Norfolk, will cover some more of the most rugged areas of the wall, starting in Beijing and walking roughly 45km during the 10 day trip in September.

Jess said: "How far we walk each day ranges, but it should enjoyable.
"I am very excited for it now, we have waited quite a while so I am pretty happy that it is now just round the corner.

"It will be a challenge at points, but it is a pleasure to have the chance to do this for charity.

"I had known Mary my whole life, she was a really close family friend of mine and me and Alex wanted to do something for her and the charity.

"She loved to travel, but never had the opportunity to go to China, so we thought this would be the perfect challenge."

The fundraising duo raised £3,000 from a charity ball they held earlier in the year, when more than 100 people attended.

The rest of money was raised from cake sales, quiz nights and sponsorship.
