THE MP for Braintree has said he will back Boris Johnson in the running for Prime Minister.

James Cleverly showed his support for the former Mayor of London on social media, saying it would not come as a surprise.

Mr Cleverly said: "I have worked with Boris for almost ten years, on the campaign trail and at City Hall in London.

"I have seen him engage with people of all backgrounds and seen him win elections against expectations.

"Like everyone else, I have seen the upbeat, enthusiastic public face of the former Mayor of London during the events like the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

"Unlike most other people I have also seen the serious, quiet and hugely effective leadership he showed in executive office."

A new prime minister and Conservative leader should be in place by September 2 at the latest.

Boris Johnson and Home Secretary Theresa May are leading contenders.

Mr Cleverly said: "I've seen him deliver as the head of government of the world's greatest city, deploying a £17 billion a year budget. Overseeing one of the largest public transport systems in the world, the Metropolitan Police, the London Fire Brigade, and an economic development program that brought billions of pounds of inward investment to the UK.

"On a personal note I received unwavering support from Boris when he tasked me to deliver difficult and significant changes to the London Fire Brigade. When attacks and criticism came he didn't recoil from decision, didn't wobble, didn't U turn.

"I know, through experience, that he can lead a team and deliver. I know, through experience, that he doesn't hide when the going gets tough and I know he will make an outstanding leader for the country."
