GREEN-fingered volunteers making Halstead a brighter place have been thanked for their dedication.

The Halstead in Bloom team has been nominated as The Gazette's Community Hero of the Week by resident Nat Alderton.

Mrs Alderton, from Chapel Street, said: "I personally think they do a fantastic job looking after all the pots and tubs in the High Street, and in other areas like the River Walk.

"They put hard work in keeping the area tidy so it can be enjoyed by everyone.

"They put in a tireless amount of voluntary time to make our town look so lovely and welcoming to visitors- they are all a real credit to our town."

Halstead in Bloom has won gold awards and best town in the annual competition for many years running, as well as enjoying numerous triumphs in RHS Britain in Bloom.

Secretary Julia Smith, from Southey Green in Sible Hedingham, said she was thrilled to see the volunteers being recognised.

She said: "I think it's brilliant- we don't do it for a reward, we do it for Halstead and we are happy to work for the town.

"It's great that the volunteers will be recognised.

"In the summer we put about 1,000 volunteer hours in but we work all year round."

She has been involved in Halstead in Bloom for the past 16 years.

She said: "My favourite thing is the community spirit, it's just incredible.

"I have made so many friends."
