A CHURCH opened its ringing chamber to the public to celebrate St George's Day.

The St Andrew's Church in Halstead invited residents to try their hand at bell ringing and find out more about the unique activity.

The tower has a set of eight bells that can be heard across the town and secretary at the tower, Angela Kerrison, said they are addictive.

She said: "We are so short of bell ringers and we wanted to attract people to come up into the tower in the hope they will think they could give it a go.

"It's addictive once you know how to handle a bell."

The event was held on Saturday, April 23, and in the evening a Ringing for England event took place across the country to celebrate St George's Day.

The bell ringers practice every Wednesday evening at 7.30pm and anyone is welcome to come along.
