A Castle Hedingham charity is giving people the chance to win up to £25,000 and help a good cause at the same time.

Colne Valley Railway Preservation Ltd, which operates the Colne Valley Railway, has joined the Unity Lottery, run by Sterling Lotteries.

People who play the lottery pay £1 every week to receive a unique six digit number, with 50p of that going towards the Colne Valley Railway Preservation Ltd.

A lottery draw takes place every week with prizes from £5 to £25,000 up for grabs.

The charity aims to develop a museum, complete with a demonstration railway portraying the history of the original Colne Valley and Halstead Railway and its effects on the communities of the upper Colne Valley.

The railway has recently announced it is having to look for a new site as the current landowner no longer wants them operating from his land in Castle Hedingham.

Talks with the owners of other potential sites are still progressing.

Paul Lemon, chairman of the Colne Valley Railway, said: “We are pleased to be part of the Unity Lottery which allows our supporters to help us develop our aim of creating a world class railway centre whilst at the same time having the chance to win £25,000.”

Although the charity will promote and market the lottery, Sterling is in charge of administering and running the scheme.
