Everyone has heard of the Red Arrows, with their spectacular routines they perform only metres apart.

But as they are difficult to get for displays, many organising committees are turning to a group from Toppesfield for an unusual alternative.

“In 2002 for the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, we thought it would be unlikely the Red Arrows would turn up to the village’s celebrations,” Matt Webb explains.

“While sitting in a pub, a group of us came up with the idea of the Red Barrows.”

The Red Barrows are the original “barrowbatic” display team - they push wheelbarrows as they simulate routines performed by the Red Arrows, and add in their own flourishes.

So far, the group has raised £40,000 for Breakthrough Breast Cancer, as well as £2,000 for the Nancy Salmon Trust.
