Most 80-year-olds would probably prefer a relaxed birthday celebration.

But not Gerald Long, who celebrated his 80th year by riding 80km - then adding an extra eight on for good measure.

The grandfather of nine cycled from his home village of Little Yeldham, through to Dunmow and the Easters and back home via Felsted.

Mr Long, who set up the Cyclists Touring Club West Suffolk group, said: “I used to cycle when I was in my teens and early 20s then, of course, you get married and have a family and all that goes by the wayside.

“When I retired at 65, I thought I’m not going to ferment so I brought myself a bike and I have been biking since I was 65."
