More must be done to make Halstead roads safer for cyclists, as more people use two wheels to get about, it is claimed.

Matt Downey, 35, a store supervisor, of Mill Bridge, Halstead, said: “I cycle to work every day to Earls Colne along with a mate and every day we have close calls as there are always drivers who don't understand cyclists need space.

“I also drive so I know it can be frustrating being stuck behind someone on a bike, but a few seconds waiting can stop you causing an accident.”
