An unusual memorial has been installed on school grounds in memory of an inspiration headteacher.

Former Alec Hunter headteacher Andrew Hutchinson lost his battle with cancer in December 2011, and the unveiling of a shed in his honour was scheduled to coincide with what would have been his 51st birthday.

The brand new shed will serve as a base for the school’s counselling service as well as offering a variety of programmes ranging from social skills to emotional literacy, from dealing with exam stress to building self-esteem.

When Mr Hutchinson was interviewed by the Times Educational Supplement, after making a huge impression in his early years as a headteacher, he was asked for a soundbite that summed up his personal philosophy, and responded: “Every man needs a shed”, believing firmly that we all need our own space, where we can gather our thoughts.
