Concerns have been raised about the loss of village amenities after plans for flats were submitted.
The applicants, Mr and Mrs Deckers, are proposing a change of use to Oxford House in Upper Holt Street, Earls Colne, from a bar and restaurant to two self-contained flats, along with associated work.
They also want to construct a two-storey property with associated works.
One objection has been lodged by Simon Ford, of Colchester Road, White Colne, who wrote: “The village can not afford less amenities it needs more!
“A restaurant, a pub, a shop even a car wash would add to the village not expensive flats to attract commuters from London who bring nothing to the village.”
The plans are currently open to consultation.
