Parish councillors have successfully lowered the speed limit on the entrance to a village after years of campaigning.

Essex Highways changed the speed limit from 60mph to 40mph in Coggeshall Road, Earls Colne, this month after councillors feared for the safety of villagers.

Ian Sparks, vice-chairman of Earls Colne Parish Council, said the change had been a long time coming.

He said: “About three years ago, just outside the village, there was a very bad accident and then about two years ago a lot further up there was another bad accident.

“There has been a couple of silly accidents over the years."
