People are being invited to travel around the world with the latest concert from the Braintree Male Voice Choir.

The Choir, which was formed in 1971, is holding its annual Spring Concert on May 10 at 7.30pm with a theme of travel.

Stephen Rumsey, the choirs new musical director who will be directing this choir at a main concert for the first time, said: “I am absolutely looking forward to this show, but it going to be hard to follow the previous MD Elisabeth Miller who was fantastic.

“I wanted to introduce themes to the concerts and after looking at the choir’s repertoire and the music that I have, I decided that it all fitted well into the theme of travel.”

The concert will feature songs such as the Nova Scotia folk song “Away from the roll of the Sea”, Ol' Man River' based around the Mississippi River from the musical Showboat; 'Swing Low, Sweet Chariot' a historic American Negro spiritual and also the anthem of the English Rugby team; and Viva Tutti sung in Italian.

The concert will also feature special guest James Stirling on classical guitar, performing songs such as 'Cavatina' by Stanley Myers, 'Sons de Carrilhoes' by Joao Pernambuco and 'Prelude No 4' by Villa Lobos.

The choir, which currently has over 50 members, rehearses once a week at St Peters in the Field, Bocking.

Mr Rumsey said: “Everyone has been rehearsing very hard and it is great to see their enthusiasm.”

Tickets for the concert, taking place at Christ Church, London Road, Braintree, cost £12 for reserved seating downstairs, concessions £10, and £9 for unreserved seating upstairs.
