Fears have been raised over the long-term future of Halstead’s maternity services after women were told they would not be able to give birth at the town’s hospital.

Colchester Hospital University Foundation Trust announced on Monday that those wanting to deliver at Halstead Hospital’s birthing centre would be unable to do so until at least June.

Post and ante-natal care will continue as normal.

The trust said any women who had already opted to give birth at the Hedingham Road hospital would instead be given the choice of a home birth or delivery at Colchester General Hospital.

Births have also been halted at maternity units in Clacton and Harwich.
