Fire fighters were called to a fire in a flat at 8.20am this morning in Progress Court, Braintree.
The property was 100 per cent smoke logged.
Crews, two from Braintree and one from Coggeshall, wore breathing apparatus and used two hose reels to extinguish the fire by 8.49am.
One person was rescued and three people were led to safety.
Crews used a high pressure fan to ventilate the flat free of smoke and a thermal image camera was used to check for any hotspots.
Firefighters dealt with the incident by 9.16am.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage, ECFRS and the police will carry out an investigation.
