Campaigners have launched a petition as they try to prevent a council from selling a historic woodland site to developers.

The Halstead 21st Century Group wants to preserve land east of the High Street, which also features 16 Second World War air raid shelters.

As of Wednesday, an online petition calling on Braintree Council to redefine the land as community green space has been signed by 259 people.

Helen Wolf, who started the petition, said: “We believe this site should be safeguarded for the enjoyment and education of the local community and visitors for generations to come."
