A dog handler and a friend’s prized pooch proved every dog does have its day after walking away with a top prize at Crufts.

Four-year-old Kerry Blue Terrier, Ray, was one of more than 21,500 dogs at the NEC in Birmingham for the world’s biggest dog show and claimed the prestigious Best of Breed award.

Handler Don Munro, of Pebmarsh, and Ray fought off competition from a number of other Kerry Blue Terriers to scoop the coveted prize.

The dog is actually owned by Mr Munro’s Italian friends of 40 years.

Mr Munro, who also has two Kerry Blue Terriers of his own, said: “They all came over to see the dog shown.

“Getting best of breed was like Christmas for them.”

Mr Munro, 68, has been attending the show for more than 50 years after originally going with a childhood friend and his parents.
