Shoplifters are stealing for need rather than profit in Essex.
There were 27 shoplifting offences reported every day in the county between April and December last year - or 7,263.
This was up more than 800 - or 13.2 per cent - on the previous year.
Chief Constable Stephen Kavanagh said: “There has been a rise in food and household items being stolen.”
