Campaigning teenagers are celebrating after allegedly learning the area’s youth services will not be axed despite cuts to the county’s budget.

Essex County Council’s cabinet gave the green light to plans to stop running the service itself and instead support schemes being run by volunteers in the community.

The service’s budget has been slashed from £12million two years ago to £3.8million for the next financial year, reducing to £2.4million by 2017.

But Hedingham School pupil Connie Lunn and her friends, who persuaded “hundreds” of people in the Halstead area to complete and return consultation forms, say they have been told services in the area will be safe.
