Braintree Council is bucking the national trend by investing money to boost its CCTV coverage.
The authority is investing £40,000 in new cameras following consultation with traders, having earlier proposed scrapping the system.
But council leader Graham Butland still believes there is not enough evidence to suggest the cameras, of which there are currently eight in Braintree town centre, are worthwhile.
