Inspectors expected to give good feedback after latest visit to Colchester General Hospital

Halstead Gazette: Inspectors expected to give good feedback after latest visit to Colchester General Hospital Inspectors expected to give good feedback after latest visit to Colchester General Hospital

Inspectors have returned to Colchester General Hospital and are expected to report that the trust has made improvements.

Members of the Keogh review team spent the day at the Turner Road hospital on Friday conducting unannounced visits on a number of wards and also meeting with staff.

They also visited the Essex County Hospital on Thursday afternoon.

The Keogh review was launched in February last year to review the quality of care in 14 hospital due to high death rates.

Colchester Hospital University Foundation Trust (CHUFT) was included as the Summary Hospital Level Mortality Index, which compares the number of deaths including those who died 30 days after leaving hospital, was too high for the previous two years.

In July the trust was given nine key recommendations to improve.

At a board of directors meeting yesterday, interim chief executive Kim Hodgson said: “The report is expected to be published in four to six weeks and we are hoping to receive some informal feedback before then.

“I am assured that if there had been any serious concerns that arose as part of the visit they would have been obligated to inform us at the time.”

Lets hope the attitudes of staff have made an incredible leap into the polite and caring.

Although they conducted unannounced visits to certain wards, I wonder if their visit was unexpected?

No! I am Spartacus says...

I recently had to have a major operation and had nothing but amazing service from staff- from A&E through to admissions, to surgery and ward staff.

I read about attitudes and manners, as referred to by others, but after speaking with patients at the time, and completely unrelated inpatient care since, am still to find someone who hasn't (in the main) been complementary over the care received.

People's health is clearly an emotive issue, and one poor example of care can be serious, life threatening and great front page fodder for newspapers, but it is also lazy to think the huge majority of care isn't quietly appreciated and professionally given.

Although I have little regard for some of the recent management at Colchester hospital, which was clearly misguided and badly chosen, I'd prefer to react positively to the care I received and heard about than the typical Daily Mail style knee-jerk waffle that attracts others...
