A speeding driver has been told he must live with the consequences of his actions for the rest of his life after the tragic death of a popular roofer.

Cyclist Brent Jelley, 23, collided with a Ford Fiesta driven by Halstead resident Joshua Rumble, in Swan Street, Sible Hedingham on October 21, 2012.

An inquest into Mr Jelley’s death on Wednesday heard the Fiesta was travelling at 40mph in a 30mph zone, but Mr Rumble has not faced criminal action.

The cyclist was treated by ambulance crews at the scene before being rushed to Broomfield Hospital, in Chelmsford, where he died the next day.

"Cyclist Brent Jelley, 23, collided with a Ford Fiesta..."

Why on earth would you word the article in that thoughtless callous way?

Considering that the rest of the article clearly indicates that at least some blame lies with the driver, why write that Mr Jelley was the one who rode into the car, implying that he was the one who made the error, while the "car" was just proceeding along and carrying the driver with it.

Let's be honest about this. Joshua Rumble drove into Mr Jelley. Hopefully not intentionally, but that's the reasonable way to describe it. Or if you wanted to avoid apportioning blame you could just say "a collision took place between...".

Condolences to Mr Jelley's family and friends.

How interesting!

I too submitted a comment on this article within which I said that I thought it was a very poor and confusing report - and also that I thought it was a shame that more professional care hadn't been taken in its production.

My comments were very soon taken down.

Strange, especially as I was most careful not to say anything that could be construed as offensive, or libelous.
