Bin collections have been delayed after Braintree Council's collection vehicles broke down.

The problem occurred before New Year but has had a knock-on effect on scheduled collection days over the entire festive period.

Many homes which had been due to have rubbish and recycling collected on Friday have not yet been visited.

A Braintree Council spokesman said: "Due to problems beyond our control we have been unable to complete collections of refuse and recycling in many parts of the district.

"We will work on Saturday and Sunday to catch up so please leave your waste out.

"Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience that this may cause."

The delays to litter collection have affected about 170 roads across the district, while more than 400 roads are awaiting recycling collection.
