Care centre working with inspectors to address key concerns

A centre for young adults with learning disabilities is working “step-by-step” with inspectors to make improvements.

Nether Priors, a home for the elderly in Colchester Road, Halstead, was re-opened by new operators Futures Care Homes last October.

An initial visit carried out by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in September found the centre required improvement in all five inspected categories.

The report, which was published in October, said: “We could find no policy and procedure for safeguarding and we found errors with the medication administration.

“There was not a robust process in place for recruiting staff and checking their suitability for working with vulnerable people that required support.

“Although the staff support system had begun to develop it was not sufficient at the time of our inspection.”

After the CQC carried out a follow-up visit, the home, which provides accommodation and care for five people, now meets standards in two of the five areas.

But it still requires improvement in staffing standards, management and standards of caring for people safely.

Following the October report, epilepsy training had been arranged for eight staff at the home and a learning disability nurse had been contacted to arrange individual care plans.

Clint Brumbley, director of Futures Care Homes, said: “We had problems with management and things which were meant to be done but weren’t.

“We have worked hard and got some things straightened out but we want to work to the standards step-by-step with the CQC.”
