More than 500 generous well wishers have donated presents to be given to those spending Christmas alone.

Mum-of-two Gemma Frost, 37, has collected hundreds of gifts to ensure people across the Braintree and Colchester districts have a Merry Christmas.

The former Ramsey College pupil has ran the appeal for the past five years but this collection has been one of the most successful.

She was supported by pupils at her former school who took it up themselves to appeal for gifts and gathered almost 200 presents.

Pupils at St Peter’s Primary School in Coggeshall have also taken part for the past two years.

Miss Frost, of Little Maplestead, said: “The feedback I received over the previous five years made me realise how much a knock on the door at Christmas, alongside a smile and a small gift can mean to so many of our residents.

“I am truly astonished at how generous everyone has been this year.

“Facebook has also helped make the appeal grow, people who I have never met are donating from all over the county and travelling miles to the present drop off points.

“Braintree District Staff, Halstead and Braintree Physiotherapy Clinic staff and Oaks Hospital, Colchester staff have all taken part and also raised an awful lot of presents.

“I am just very proud that North Essex is making a big impact on the community, and helping to spread the Christmas spirit in such a loving and generous way.”

She thanked all those who helped, especially the drop off points and helpers.
