Town centre CCTV cameras could be axed or passed to other authorities to manage as a council looks to make £1.5million of savings.

Braintree Council announced in August that it needed to make further budget cuts to close £750,000 shortfalls in 2015/16 and 2016/17, following a reduction in central government funding.

A breakdown of how the council proposes to make the savings has now been revealed, with a review of the effectiveness and efficiency of its four CCTV cameras in Halstead and eight in Braintree among the proposed measures.

The council claims it could help save £24,000 across 2014/15 and 2015/16.

A spokesman said: “The proposals put forward are around looking at potential savings, but it is important that the impact of these are assessed.

“As such, we will be discussing the effectiveness and efficiency of the CCTV systems, how they are run and the overall management of them with stakeholders, such as the police and Halstead Town Council, before any final decisions are made.”
