Halstead: A hair-raising effort for cancer fighting funds
5:00pm Wednesday 30th October 2013 in News
A cervical cancer survivor has raised more than £1000 for charity after shaving her head.
Emma Bakers, 32, of Churchill Avenue, Halstead, and friend Katie Saltzer, 23, smashed their target of £1000 for Cancer Research UK.
They decided to raise money after Miss Bakers was diagnosed with cervical cancer last year following a routine smear test.
She is now cancer free but the pair wanted to encourage other woman to be tested so had the chop at Julian Cutter in the High Street on October 19.
Miss Bakers said: "“I was quite lucky because they caught the cancer really early.
“You don’t realise how common the cancer is so I want to make people more aware of it and to go for smear tests."
They have raised £1223 so far and donations can be made for the next three months.
