Halstead: Choir celebrate birthday with "fantastic" concert
5:00pm Monday 14th October 2013 in News
A choir inspired by the film Sister Act is thrilled to have reached its 10th birthday.
Jen Skingsley, 32, and Jane Banks, 32, formed the gospel choir after being inspired by the film, which starred Whoopi Goldberg as a singer who starts a gospel choir in a convent.
Miss Skingsley, who grew up in Head Street, Halstead, said: “We watched the film one day and just thought “Let’s start up a choir.”
But Miss Skingsley was so nervous that no one would come to the first rehearsal that she dragged her mum, Ros, along.
“I thought if there were at least three of us there we could just chat and go home but 15 people came,” she said.
The group celebrated their birthday with a “fantastic” concert on Saturday 5 October where they were joined by some of their ex-members for a few songs.
Miss Skingsley’s sister, Victoria Skingsley, 31, of Tweed Close, Halstead, baked a cake complete with icing models of each permanent member of the group, music sheets and grand piano.
