Halstead: County council refuses to rule out sale of youth centres
9:00am Saturday 12th October 2013 in News
Voluntary groups will be asked to take up responsibility for services the county council can no longer fund.
Essex County Council (ECC) wants to reduce its youth service budget from £5million to £2million a year, just 18 months after reducing it from £12million.
A consultation into the service could put facilities such as the Halstead Resource Centre, in Parsonage Street, at risk.
ECC cabinet member for education, Ray Gooding, said selling off youth centres, such as the Parsonage Street facility, has not been ruled out.
He said: “There may be some impact but where we have strong usage we will look to provide services.
“We need people to really engage with this consultation, rather than just tell us they don’t want us to cut services, they need to tell us which ones are important.”
