Halstead: Rogue trader warning issued as pensioner is rescued from £20,000 solar panel scam
3:00pm Saturday 5th October 2013 in News
Trading Standards has issued a stark warning about rogue traders after an elderly man was almost fleeced out of more than £20,000.
The man, who does not wish to be identified but is in his eighties, was conned into withdrawing the huge sum by a rogue trader who had convinced him to have solar panels installed at his home in Halstead.
Fortunately, the man’s bank noticed two unusually large withdrawals and contacted Essex County Council’s Trading Standards, whose officers were able to step in and recover the money because the trader had started the work within the seven day cooling off period required by consumer law.
