Halstead: Latest battle to save town centre woodland
1:00pm Friday 20th September 2013 in News
Protesters who claim there has been “wholesale destruction” of Halstead’s woodland are preparing for the latest battle.
Members of Halstead’s 21st Century group, who are trying to preserve the site called Land East of the High Street, are set to voice their latest concerns over its future at a Braintree Council meeting on Monday.
They do not believe the survey, which they claim has damaged trees, needed to be carried out as planning permission is not currently being sought.
Tesco originally looked set to build on the site, which is part owned by Braintree Council, but its plans were rejected and it pulled out earlier this year.
Since the beginning of September Braintree Council has been carrying out an updated topographical survey ready to put the site back on the market.
It is expected to go up for sale within the next few months and Braintree Council has said it receives enquires from time to time about it from developers.
The council stressed the survey has nothing to do with the meeting on Monday to review the Local Development Framework, which maps out development in the district until 2026.
