Braintree district: Council sells voter information to private companies
11:00am Friday 6th September 2013 in News
Information about voters in Braintree district is available to anyone willing to pay for it.
Braintree Council is one of 307 local authorities to have sold information from 2007 to 2012.
The Big Brother Watch campaign group, which compiled the findings, has called for the edited electoral register (EER) to be abolished.
The EER, which was introduced in 2002, can be bought by anyone and councils have no power to refuse a request to buy information.
Details about voters in Braintree district were sold on four separate occasions during the five-year time period.
