Halstead: Police unhelpful over weapon haul
3:00pm Tuesday 3rd September 2013 in News
A fancy dress shop owner who traipsed through Halstead with swords and machetes claims police incompetence prevented her from disposing of them safely.
Val Tuck took the arsenal of about 12 souvenir-type weapons, which she had not hired out from Illusions Fancy Dress in Earls Colne for about a decade, to Halstead Police Station after having a clearout.
When she called Essex Police’s non-emergency 101 number for advice it was allegedly suggested she dropped them at the station.
But on arrival, she claims the station was still not open and that once the receptionist was finally available she could not have been more unhelpful.
The woman eventually agreed for Mrs Tuck, 57, to go and get the weapons from her car, which was parked up the hill, but was allegedly nowhere to be seen again when she returned to hand them over.
Having waited for a number of minutes with the heavy weaponary piled in her arms, she eventually left and disposed of the weapons as safely as possible herself.
An Essex Police spokesman said: "We are looking into the matter and will take whatever action needs to be taken.”
