Halstead: Village to fund raise for war memorial
9:10am Saturday 17th August 2013 in News
A campaign has been launched in a bid to have Colne Engaine’s war heroes properly remembered.
The village’s existing war memorial was hidden away in the graveyard at St Andrew’s Church, but plans are now in place to rejuvenate it and give it far more prominence in time for the 2014 remembrance services.
Gareth Jones, a member of the Colne Engaine War Memorial Committed, said: “The project came about after the Remembrance Day service last year in St Andrews Church as, while there is a plaque for some people who have fallen, we wondered why we didn’t have a proper memorial.
"It turned out we did but it’s tucked away in the graveyard."
The design for the new memorial will include the present one, a wooden beam inscribed with names, which will be built into the entrance of the new covered monument.
The committee plans to fundraise to cover the cost of the project, although this is yet to be confirmed, and details can be found at facebook.com/ColneEngaineWarMemorialProject.
